About Edgar Allen Poe's
The Cask of Amontillado
The Cask of Amontillado, short story by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in Godey’s Lady’s Book in November 1846. The narrator of this tale of horror is the aristocrat Montresor, who, having endured, as he claims, a thousand injuries at the hand of the connoisseur Fortunato, is finally driven by yet another insult to seek revenge. Amid the carnival celebrations Montresor encounters the drunken Fortunato and, on the pretext of seeking his judgment of a newly purchased cask of amontillado sherry, takes him to his palazzo. While keeping up a conversation heavy with irony, Montresor leads Fortunato into the cellar, through the family catacombs with their dust and skeletons, to the deepest crypt. There Montresor chains the unlucky Fortunato in a small chamber and, brick by brick, walls him in.
